We say to "get a life" because sometimes people just waste there time doing nothing important for Example: My brother playing video Games for 5 hours, and I tell him To get a Life, Because he can be doing things way more important then playing Video Games and Rotting his brain away, so yeah I know where your coming from because yeah we're all a-live but sometimes we just say things that we might or might not really mean,so it just really matters who you are.

I tell my room mate all the time to get a life. All she does is sit at home and stay on her computer when she is not working. I want her to go out once in a while and have some fun, meet someone and just have a good time.

what they mean by that is to get an exciting life one that doesn't make you so obsessed on one particular thing. But you're right other than that the phrase doesn't make sense but i guess it's supposed to be slang even if we all DO have lives :)

They say that because people sometimes seem so desperate. Or their geeks or something. So they need to get a life. It just means mostly to get out more and stop being geeky or desperate.

It just a metaphor for "get lost and get out of my hair" or "get lost and don't bother me". Or "go fly a kite!" the same meaning as "get a life!".
