It's the childrens book...The Velveteen Rabbit. I gave a copy to each of my children, and to each of my grandchildren. It is the book I still remember msot vividly, the first book I ever loved. It's my pick above anything else I ever read and loved.
As far as adult classics, it would have to be Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy.
