My neighbor has said he doesn't care about his yard, so he's unlikely to do anything to treat it. He also lets the dandelions go to seed, and mows without a bag. Our yards are the only ones in the neighborhood that don't use a chemical service throughout the year. I'm willing to use Round-Up and start all over, but is there any point if the neighbor doesn't do anything? I'd prefer to stay organic if possible.

I agree with Dozer on this one.... The only organic way to get rid of those yellow terds, are to completely resod both yards. Thats a huge investment. 2-4D is a simple and safe way to stamp out those weeds. Its strickly a broadleaf killer, and will not harm your grass, IF you follow the instructions. Now you can have someone spray it for you, or do it youself. The chemical Momentom is a great way to control all your weeds in your yard. You can find both of these fine products at your local CO-OP or your local fertilizer facility. Now if you don't have those near by, a farm store or at last resort go to your local Home-Depo, or some other place like that. I would go there last, yur best bet is your fertilzer store. they would know what i'm talking about.

It will be an uphill struggle always. His crop of dandelions will continually seed into your lawn. Organically speaking, use vinegar on a warm sunny day or use a dandelion weeder and pop them out. It does make a satisflying popping noise when it comes out. Vinegar is a NON-SELECTIVE herbicide, it will wither whatever it lands on green wise. You can use Round Up BUT it is also a NON-SELECTIVE and much stronger so SPOT TREAT VERY CAREFULLY, not on a windy day. The SELECTIVE, ie Killex/ Ortho weed killers, herbicides that the others are mentioning is the easiest way to kill the existing weeds and still keep the grass. The best way to deter weeds in your lawn is to.....overseed regularly with a grass seed. This crowds out potential weeds before they can get a toe hold in your lawn. Use an overseeder lawn seed, as this will germinate quickly and fill in faster. Do this throughout May to September at least , every 1 to 2 months. After you mow just quickly sprinkle the grass seed and water in. About the longer grass theory...has this person ever seen a pasture of long grass and All the pretty dandelions that grow there.?? I guess you can't call the Lawn Nazis and report him. Huh? How about accidently attaching a Weed n Feed to your hose and ACCIDENTLY spray over the fence once in a while?? Just a thought. PS sorry about the CAPITAL LETTERS, but after reading other answers I thought I had better emphasized certain points.

Yard Full Of Dandelions

I have the same problem with the orchardist next door letting all the fluff go! They don't care, and it wreaks havoc with my lawn and pasture! Just sprayed Roundup on all the dandylions (not so dandy) but if organic, check into the concentrated vinegar solution that kills weeds better than Roundup. Just a search on the web should find it easily!

My grass is spotty as we are remodeling, but when it is lush, the seeds dont have much place to land and grow, but when they do, regular feeding of the grass with weed n feed seems to do the trick somewhat effortlessly. Thats the clue! Less effort as you are fighting what could be a losing battle if you give ground so to speak. Keep up the faith, and you will get a handle on it.

The thing I have thought of is a windbarrier on the chain link fence between properties that snags the little dandy seeds and doesnt allow them across.

Or pray that these people who dont care move! I've seen those results too!!! Much to our delight. jb

Hi, we had the same problem. I used Ortho Weed and Feed for Dandelions, and there gone now. I didn't have a spreader,so I sprinkled it around the yard by hand. I only have a couple of burn marks if the yard. It's real green and pretty now! Bye

Use a broad leaf weed killer in the fall, usually around mid-October. That's when the next batch of dandelions are just getting started. They overwinter, then get a jump on everything else in the spring. Much easier to kill in the fall with a weed and feed fertilizer, then during their prime growing season.

All effort on your part is futile unless your neighbor also takes action. They way your question is phrased, it sounds like you know that, and you want to get rid of your neighbor. Now I'm not gonna say what you should do with it, but weed killer gets rid of dandelions.

I use a chemical spray - 2-4-D - that works very well for dandelions. It kills broad leaf but does no damage to the lawn itself. Never use Round-Up to kill weeds in your lawn! You'll kill your lawn.
If you wish to remain organic then I would suggest you get out the shovel and dig them all out. It's good exercise and it'll help your tan.

The guy who does our lawn is really knowledgable. He says that if you mow your lawn at a little longer length, the dandilions can't germinate. So, even if your neighbor's seeds blow over, they won't grow in your lawn.
