Gasoline hadn't been invented then! The dinosaurs and giant ferns took over most of the roads anyway, so there wasn't much room for the cars.

I am an oldster (57). When I got my license you could often get gas for 25 to 33 cents per gallon. Lots of times when I was short on money I would stop for a dollars worth of gas.
You could also buy a pack of cigarettes for 25 cents.

It was around $1.40 when I got my license in 1984...I also remember gas dropping below $1.00 per gallon during the first Gulf War.

Gas was still under a dollar a gallon. One gallon in the bug would get us a good night of beach cruising.
