If the terms have the same denominator, you add the numerators together. So, if you have 1/3 + 2/3 you will get (1 + 2)/3, or 3/3 = 1.

Other Examples:
2/5 + 2/5 = (2 + 2)/5, or 4/5
9/2 + 3/2 = (9 + 3)/2, or 12/2 = 6.

Hope this helps

EDIT: To courtney: Unless the number under the square root is a prime number squared, it is not a rational number. Rational numbers are numbers that can be written in the form p/q, where p,q are integers and relatively prime. So, squareroot (4) = squareroot(2 squared) = 2 = 2/1, while squareroot(3) is not rational.

You just add the numerators and keep the denominators.

the number under the radical must be the same.(if your dealing with radicals) like 1sq.rt. 3 + 2sq.rt.3 =3sq.rt 3

but you cant add 2sqrt5 +4sqrt7
but that doesn't seem to be what your doing so....
