Because we can. As soon as children learn how to destroy things, they love it. I cut up one of my doll's dresses and tried to make it into a bikini top. It didn't work.

Jealousy. The dolls remain beautiful and young and have no personal problems. The girls grow up and get pimples, and lots of adolescence problem with siblings, schoolmates, etc.

I saw an article about this about a year ago in Newsweek (I think), they described it as a rite of passage, and said it was actually a common thing among younger girls.
honestly, I find it frightening, I did not do that to my dolls.

I did this when I started getting sick of playing with Barbies. For me, it was nothing more than a new game to play. My friends did this too. Sometimes when we would play together, it was like we were competing with who could make the craziest looking barbie.
I think we just did this out of boredom, as I am still friends with most of those girls, and we have all grown into very sane, non-violent people.

Like everything it is a learning process as well as it probably being an acting out thing. It is best that they get whatever it is out of their system before they become an adult and/or a parent.

They're putting away childish things.
Seems healthier than the endless parade of man-boys on the net who reverently save every toy, cartoon, and habit of their childhhods.

Don't know what kind of girls you've been hanging out with but I don't recall any of my sisters doing that and my wife has EVERYONE she's ever owned, trust me , I know, because I've had to move the boxes everytime we've moved. ALL OF THEM.
