I spent a lot of time in Italy back in the 60s.... I was in the Navy at the time... I would go to a bus station and buy a ticket by just giving the man some money... he would give me a ticket with a bus number on it and I would go get on that bus... when the ticket ran out the driver would tell me to get off... I would be in some small town or village... I would just wander around to see what was there... I would always be met by friendly people and I was very often invited into homes for meals... I was taken around and shown the local sights... I very seldom had to pay for my food or drink and the people would be insulted if I offered... This was true any where out of the big cities... from South to North.... but I will say the best was probably up North... but then Sicily was fun too... I met Good people every where I went... only bad ones seemed to be the ones out to get the tourists and sailors in the big cities.... that is the same every where in the world.... I did this in Spain as well with much the same results... good people are every where. I never did learn more than a phrase or two of italian... but that did not matter... I was invited in and even if no one spoke english it was always a good time...and someone almost always knew more english than I knew Italian...

I think of the Rennaisance and Italian artists and musicians and opera. Where would the art world be without the contributions of Italian artists? Also the food and pastries-bellissimo!!
