I feel really bad saying this; but my grandma gave me baseball cards every year for my birthday until I turned 18.
I was a huge collector when I was young, but once I hit, like, 13, I really stopped collecting cards of any sort. But she would keep buying me this set and that set, nothing that was even of any actual worth or significance.
However, (with the exception of some of these gifts -- like a Bible to an atheist...WTF!) if the person is giving you a gift that they honestly put thought into, but it just wasn't what you wanted...at least they thought of you, and at least they bought you something.
Some people don't get anything in this world. Anyway, great question! And great answers!

The boyfriend went shopping for some things for himself and brought me back an egg slicer. WTF?? He said I could slice his hard boiled eggs for him when I make them. Then a few years ago for Christmas he bought me a Food Saver....I was so disappointed I wanted to cry. I never use the thing
