Main thing here is keeping track of your units... you have to use the same units on all the sides when you find volume:
17' x 17' x 2" (BAD, we are mixing inches and feet)
=> 17' x 17' x 1/6' (better)
= 289/6 ft³
Now, remember that 1 yd³ = 3x3x3 ft³ = 27 ft³:
(289/6 ft³)(1 yd³/27 ft³) = 1.7840 yd³
Now find the cost:
(1.7840 yd³)(40 $/yd³) = $71.36
The total cost will be $71.36.

Convert 17ft to inches
Multiply 17 times 12
17 x 12 = 204 inches
204 x 204 x 2 = 83213 cubic inches
1 cubic foot 36 inches
36 x 36 x 36 = 46656 cubic yard
divide 83232 by 46656
83232 / 46656 = 1.7839391838 cubic yards
Multiply 1.7839291838 times 40
1.7839291838 x 40 =
$ 71,35716732
$ 71.36 rounded to two decimal places

you place concrete, the slab is too thin, make it 4 inches thick for a walk way, place reinforcing welded wire fabric in it
17 ft times 17 ft times 2/12 ft equals calculated value ft cubed
calculated value ft cubed divide by 27 ft cubed per cubic yard
$40 times the cubic yard from above
do the math and impress your friends the answer is between $70 and $75

Volume = 17 x 17 x 1 / 6 ft³
Volume = 17² / 27 x 1 / 6 yd³
Volume = 1.784 yd³
Cost = $ 40 x 1.784
Cost = $71.36

First let's convert all the dimensions to yards.
Since there are 3 feet per yard and 36 inches per yard:
Volume = 17/3 * 17/3 * 2/36
Volume = 1.784 cu yd
Cost = 40 * 1.784 = $71.36

as soon as you see the word cubic, you are dealing with the volume
thus we are going to find the volume of the slab:
17 ft = 17/3 yd
2 in = 2/12 ft = (2/12)/3 yd
so,
V = lwh = (17/3)(17/3)(2/12)/3 = 1.78 cubic yd
1.78 (40) = $71.20

first convert ft. into yards. 17/3. now (17/3)*(17/3). We get 32 and 1/9. now convert in. into yards. (2/12)/3. now multiply (2/12)/3 by 32 and 1/9. Now multiply THAT answer by $40, and we get about $71.36. That's your cost, just make sure you dont over order the amount of concrete you need!

But the concrete company isn't going to sell you 1.784 cubic yards of concrete, the smallest they will sell you will be 2 cubic yards. which is $80 dollars. Then they will cart off the difference or you can pour yourself a nice little walk-way with the extra. :)

to convert ft to yds just divide by 9. That will tell you how many sqyds you have. You really need to have a contractor give you an estimate for pouring. Price will depend on grade of cement and what the contractor charges for labor. Be sure to shop around. Never take your first offer.

17 X 17 = 298 ft^2
298/6 = 48.167 ft^3
48.167 / 27 = 1.78 cubic yards
1.78 X 40 = $71.20
