The numbered world thingy is a leftover from the cold war. The 'third world' was the undeveloped battle ground where the Communist and Capitalist (or 'Free') worlds duked it out by proxy. So there wasn't really a '1st' and '2nd' world. Since the Capitalists won, I guess they could be considered the 1st world, though, and China, by not collapsing like the Soviets, could claim second place.

I wouldn't go around underestimating China, though.

I would, their large cities are very modern and industrialized, while their rural areas are very poor and many don't have electricity or running water. They are definately not a 1st world country and with their large cities are not a 3rd world country.

We won't really know that until somebody starts throwing nuclear bombs around. Currently they are distancing themselves from the two ecomonic philosophies and are happy to exploit both to their own advantage. That puts them in a world of their own.
