Here's a hypothetical example of what I am trying to calculate, but I don't know how to do it.

The town of Mayberry has a population of 5500 people. 3 out of every 10 people in the town of Mayberry have had the chickenpox at some point in their life.

What is the mathematical process for getting from 5500 to 3 out of 10 ???

Please explain as simply as possible.

3 divided by 10 = x divided by 5500

x is the unknown

x = 3/10 times 5500

x = 1650 have had chickenpox

You are given that 3 people for every 10 in the total population had the chickenpox.

Since you are given the total population = 5500, all you have to do to get the number of people stricken with chickenpox (c) is to make a ratio and proportion as :

c/5500 = 3/10 , and solve for the actual number with chickenpox (c).

5500/10 x 3

5500/10= 550

550 x 3= 1650

3 / 10 = x / 5500
x = 16500 / 10
x = 1650 is no. expected to have chickenpox.

10x=3(5500)
x=1650

work out this
10 x n=5500
then do 3 x n
take both #s and create ur ratio
