there are many programming languages and i dont know which one is better for my project.

Astronomers today tend to favor IDL and Fortran. Some simple modeling is best on Matlab. Fortran is more powerful than Matlab. IDL is easier to use than fortran and just as powerful but it is expensive if you don't already have it.

Yes, IDL is ideal but when in doubt or short of cash always use C++

Most astronomers use IDL, but it's not free. You have to pay for a license, or your school does. But it's most widely used.

I like BASIC. It works very well, but is obsolete today. C is good too, and it is modern. You can even use Java, but what a pain that is!

C++ or Unix or IDL would be my recommendations.
