if you can't get it up through a 2nd floor window, buy a split box spring. Same size just comes in 2 pieces, I had to do this before. Nobody cuts one in half and re uses it.

It seems as if you have the same floor plan for your house as I have. I did cut mine in half as it was all wood covered with fabric. I then joined it back together using wood strips the same size as the ones I cut using wood screws. Most so called boxed springs do not have springs anymore as the are just a wood frame with plywood on top. Be sure to check to make sure before you start cutting. After that experience I bought the select comfort air bed systems as the entire bed comes in boxes that easily go up the stairs and are easy to assemble.
Taking out the windows is a lot of work and there is all ways the possibility of breaking one. (Don't ask me how I know that)

I've seen them taken up on top of truck roofs to 2nd floor windows that had to be removed; but never seen one cut in half.

Keep in mind it'll have more metal springs than wood and taking it apart may be a disaster; many of them are more torsion bars than springs; it'll make it impossible to return and certainly void the warranty. I'd pull the tackcloth off the bottom and see what I was getting into before I even consider it.

Last resort? I guess you gotta do what you gotta do

You will compromise the integrity of the unit if you cut it in half. Try fitting it through a window, or get two doubles and put the mattress on both of them. Many people do this, espeically in Europe where the stairs are narrow and winding.

NO. Not if you want to use it again for sleeping on.

Besides they don't cut very easily. They have steel springs and steel rods inside them. If you took a bolt cutter and cut them (after you sliced away the outer covering) it would take you hours.

I don't know if you want to do that, but many companies that sell and deliver mattresses will do this. Call one and ask how they do it.
