I live over an hour away from my local hospital, so i decided that i would go when the pain got really bad, and i needed pain relief.( I must say that i decided this when i had about 2 weeks to go till i was due).
But when it came to it, i just never felt like that. I called my midwife at 6pm, and said i thought i may be in labour, but wasnt too sure, as the pain wasnt that bad, just a bit of backache, took some paracetomol, and was fine, but decided that coz the hospital was an hour away by car, that i would just go now.

Good job i did, coz 45 mins into the car journey, the contractions were comming every 1 minute, although i was still convinced that they were braxton hicks coz they were not all that pain full.

In the end, i got to hospital at 8pm, contractions every 30 secs, and was 7cm dialated.

Then i had my son 45 mins later. and with none of the pain relif, coz the pain wasnt that bad, and my son was breech, and back to back, which is apparently not too normal!

Yet yesterday i got a paper cut, and nearly cried with pain!! lol!

Well, with my first I was induced and was already at the hospital.
With my second the contractions came on so quickly that although they started about 9 minutes apart by the time we woke my other son up and threw everything in the car and drove the 10 minutes to the hospital my contractions were already less then 1 minute apart.
With my third they were so afraid I would have him in the parking lot=) that they ordered me to stay w/in 15 minutes of the hospital during the last month. After three false alarms w/in a week I was so fed up with going to the hospital I refused to go believing it was another false alarm. Finally, after about two hours I decided to go...good thing, because by the time we got there my contractions were about 1 min apart and I was 9 centimeters!

With my first baby the contractions were about 10 minutes apart very soon after they started, but I held off going to the hospital 'til they were five minutes apart - which was 24 hours later! Then I got to the hospital and they slowed right down and in the end I had to have my waters broken.

With my second my waters broke quite soon after the contractions started so I headed straight for the hospital.

Good luck with yours!

With my first son my water broke before contractions began so i went right when that happened.

With my second son I started having contractions during the middle of the night but they were here and there. The next morning they started coming more regular and once they were 4-5 minutes apart i went to the hospital.

Good Luck!! It's so wonderful being a mother!!!

Make sure that you phone the hospital once you go into labour to make sure that they are ready for you for a start (some programme I watched last night about midwives worried the hell out of me for pg women)

Then wait until they are 5 mins apart and go to hospital. It is very boring in hospital and you feel much safer and at home in your own home so try to stay there as long as you can (the unfamiliar surroundings can be daunting)

Good luck with your impending birth

I was induced with my first but with my second the contractions started at midnight and went to the hospital at 5am, to be honest I didn't time the contractions at that point, I just knew they were fairly close and I was in severe pain so I knew I had to go and so will you, the general thing is 5 Min's apart though, but if your not sure ask your midwife, I can assure you though that you will know when to go without doubt!!

I LOVE telling my birthing story. My baby came 5 weeks early. My water broke at 2 am. I had no pain whatsoever. By 3, I started having little menstrual-like cramps. By 4, hubby and I headed to the hospital. In the truck, my contractions suddenly started at 3 minutes apart. I was 4 cm dialated upon arrival. By 7:45 am, I was 10 cm dialted. By 8:45 am, I had my boy in my arms!

I wanted to wait longer to go to the hospital, but since baby was early, I had to go right away.

I was induced after having a week of contractions that did nothing. I would suggest waiting to go to the Hospital until either my water broke or my contractions were about 7 minutes apart or so. You are def. more comfortable at home.

I was unfortunately induced (not something I recommend) but I was going to wait to go the hospital til the contractions were 5 min apart OR my water broke. That's what the doc and childbirth instructor suggested.
Are you just curious or trying to get get info for your own impending delivery? If u have any questions you really should ask your OB, they've heard it all--trust me! :)
Best of luck, Amy
