we got the panel off exposing the inside of the door but we dont know where to go from there

Looks like something is up with the latch, you'll have to remove the door panels and manually work the latch, I'd say unless you're very car savvy, take it to your mechanic

After removing the inside door trim panel, follow the rods that go from the inside or outside door handles to the latch and try to manually operate the latch levers that these rods attach to. Spray the latch down good with WD-40 to help free up any gummed up mechanism inside the latch.
