Counterfactual history, i like. If the US had not aided the French during the First Indochina War and not invaded Vietnam and started the Second Indochina War then chances are that the August Revolution would have marked the beginning of the People's Republic of Viet Nam in 1945. It would have also meant that civil society would have not been "bombed back to the stone age" in Cambodia and the popularity of the popularity of Prince Sinahouk would have made it impossible for the Khmer Rouge to rise to power. The Third Indochina War would not have happened and a genocide would have been avoided. Also the 4M who died in Viet Nam would be alive.
Chances are that Viet Nam would have developed with the same success of the Chinese and the Soviets and a regional communist block would have become quite prosperous. I doubt that the problems of the communist block have any other source than the state of war they were forced to enter by capitalist aggression. So that a peaceful asia would have been a model of development for all the world.
Eventually Latin America would have successfully turned socialist, as it repeatedly tried to do against the wishes of the CIA. Chances are Africa would have been a recipient of massive aid from socialist countries and Europe would have likely turned socialist if the US had not boycotted the CP's of Italy and France or given aid and materiel to the fascists in Greece.

But then again, if the US had remained out of all these countries, it wouldn't really be an empire.
Peace

Are you kidding. We stopped Communism in their tracks. Ya, sure, because the Communist did not live to
there end of the deal we made with them in January 1973. They waited till the spring of 1975 when we
were completely out of there; then the cowards came down and took the South. But South Vietnam was all
they got. Who in their right mind would go on and invade other countries when in the conflict they lost 20 to our
one. We saved many other countries from falling to the enslaving Government that would have raised the
prices of many of the products used all around the world. If we didn't stop the domino: many in the world would
be in poverty. We stopped the in Korea. South Korea is now a free and prosperous country.

If there was no Vietnam War?

If there was no French phase, Vietnam would have likely become Communist as Ho Chi Minh had jointed the Communists after France wouldn't give Vietnam independence after WWI, but it is unlikely that Vietnam would have played a part in the Cold War, as there would have been no struggle there to attact attention to the problem from Moscow or from Washington.

If America didn't become involved, North Vietnam would have carried Ho Chi Minh to the Presidency over Diem, and with the French campaign as backdrop, it is likely that Communist Vietnam might have helped other Communist movements in southeast asia.

The larger consequences would be that the entire region would be unstable, and could possibly fall to Communism. Tawain, South Korea, Japan, and India were safe, but Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia would have all been in danger of falling to Communist movements. Largely as the US war effort in Vietnam kept so much of the attention on Vietnam that Thailand, Burma, and Malaysia were able to stabilize themselves so that Communism wouldn't take effect in their countries.

bill water's right, it started right in America. It started out when Eazy-E's uncle made a statement to Arnold Shwarznegger about how fighting in the jungle would hav been easier than he made it seem in "predator" Arnie told president Clinton what MIchael-E had said. They sent millions of troops to Vietnam, telling everyone that it was just a fight against communism, but they were trying to prove a point. Eventually everyone died in Vietnam, Julius Caesar's ghost came and detained John McCain in his ghost prison where McCain fell asleep and woke up 69 years later as a presidential candidate

Well on the side of Vietnam, nothing. Everything that has happened would have happened, just sooner. On the American side, same result as well. Things only would have been different if the U.S had won.

well... which Vietnam War? The French one or the American one?

Seriously, if it hadn't started with the French, I wonder if it even would have become communist?

And BTW, hippies didn't just complain about the Vietnam War...

Not much. There'd be more people alive right now. We wouldn't have movies like Apocolypse Now, or Platoon. Forrest Gump would be missing a few scenes, and a lot of hippies would have had nothing to complain about. Other than that. It didn't prevent or accomplish anything. Kind of like another war that's fresh in my mind...

56,000 less dead Americans plus a third of the homeless would not be veterans, The domino theory would be still as stupid as it was. We would have better roads, health care, schools, because we didn't spend all our money on bombs. Rambo movies would make even less sense. but Lockheed and military industrial complex stocks would not be so high.
