Your pets should be microchipped.. Then you get a sign for the front and back that says something like ' our pets are microchipped for identification purposes ' It will maybe deter someone who was thinking they might steal pets and resell them.

I think it's more common tho for thieves to break in if someone is selling puppies. I mean it is rare for someone to break into a house and randomly steal a dog. Unless you have a rare breed, or a breed that is hard to come by, they aren't going to break into your house to steal a pet. I wouldn't leave them alone in the yard, cause pets are stolen out of people's back yards. But if you have puppies for sale, and people calling and coming to the house, don't give your home address or directions to anyone whose number doesn't come up on the call display.

That is about all you can do. Depending on where you live I don't think there is too big of a threat of your dog being stolen and sold overseas unless it is a very rare breed or something. Your best bet is to not leave the dog unattended to for long periods of time. If your dog is strictly an outside dog then there would be a much better chance of getting the dog stolen. My guess is that most dogs taken in the US are neighbors who sneak annoying dogs out of backyards and bring them to the pound and animal activists who think you are mistreating the dog. I got a note one summer when my dog was in the cat with the window cracked and the AC running for no less than 10 minutes while I ran a rented movie back into the store.

you can ask your vet about getting a chip put in them and if they go missing they can be tracked. most likely the person that stole those puppies was someone that they knew or allowed in their home. Protect your home-lock your doors, set the alarm, ect and there shouldn't be any reason to worry. Also put stickers on the outside of your front door saying how many and what kind off pets you have that way in case there is a fire the fire fighters can save them. you're a good "mommy" to worry but don't stress.

in that incident, weren't the people were selling the puppies and that's how the thieves got into the house (posing as potential buyers). if i'm thinking of the same story....i don't think it's commonplace for robbers to break into a house to steal pets..if so, they probably aren't random strangers...more like people who know your pet.

just keep your pets inside when you aren't home. lock your doors. alarm system if you're really paranoid.

Protect your pets the same way you protect anything important -- lock the doors. Get an alarm system if that will make you feel better. Never leave them unattended outside.

HOWEVER, please, please don't give those horrible thieves the power over you to make you feel scared! Don't let the bad guys win!! Do what you can to improve your safety -- then live life WITHOUT fear.

Good luck.

You know I worry about the same thing sometimes! I have a pit and she's beautiful! Get your dogs microchipped first! Lock your doors and don't let them have free-roam while you're gone! Don't leave them outside alone! Maybe get a BEWARE OF DOG sign, so they think the dogs might try to attack, even though they probably wouldn't!
Hope that never happens!
Good luck!

as you can see by the news there is no absolute way to protect your pets from getting stolen, but microchipping them can help in the event that the unfortunate happens.
