It's not recommended. Theres a lot of germs and organisms in the soil that *can* pose an issue to your health and the babies, not to mention fertilizers and chemicals. It is best to avoid it.

The image of a content, pregnant woman enjoying her garden is heartwarming. But gardening can pose serious risks to a pregnant woman. Be sure to do it safely.
The issue is not back strain, but toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is a serious infection caused by a bacteria called toxoplasma gondii. The pregnant woman feels as if she has the flu, and babies who get this infection can have extremely serious physical and mental problems that will last a lifetime. It's best not to risk this situation.
The parasite that causes the infection lives in raw meet and in cat feces. Because gardens are natural, outdoors areas, they can easily have soil that has some cat feces, animal bits or both mixed into the soil. The parasite can have gotten into the soil from a nearby dead bird or from a cat's droppings. There's no way to see the parasite, or to know you have caught the infection until it is too late.
If you are pregnant and working outdoors or with soil, be sure to wear solid gloves while doing so. Do not touch your mouth with your gloves while they're on. When you are done with your task, wash your hands well with antibacterial soap.
These simple precautions might ensure a lifetime of health for you and your child!

I went to babycenter.com and it said that you can do some gardening, but make sure you wear gloves to prevent toxoplasmosis. I'm guessing it's a danger because stray cats and dogs could go potty in your yard and garden without you even knowing, and that's not something you should come in contact with. Also, keep your hands away from your face while your gardening, and don't use any weed killers and pesticides. If you're just out there digging up weeds and planting flowers, you should be fine, and the fresh air would be great too! Good luck :)

When you are pregnant you can't be around cat feces or dead animals. Its the reason you are not supposed to change litter boxes either. Parasites residing in those items could cause an infection called Toxoplasmosis.
It's entirely possible to come into contact with those items and never know it from a cat (or other animal) walking through your garden. As long as you wear proper gardening gloves and do not touch your mouth or mouth area (like to wipe sweat away) during gardening, you should be ok. Basically, treat the soil like you would if you were touching raw meat!

I've never heard anything about gardening & pregnancy. You wouldn't want to handle any chemicals I'm sure or do anything too strainous, but basic planting & weeding should be perfectly fine.

I *think* what they want you to be aware of is the possibility of toxoplasmosis. Cats use your garden for their own personal potty, thus leading to the possibility of contracting it. Wash up after gardening! Best of luck.
