These are examples of what you'd want to get if your laptop HD is an "IDE" drive. If your laptop is over a year old, it is most likely that you have an IDE drive. If your laptop is newer, they also make SATA to USB adapters.

What you do is attach the HD to the adapter, install any software that is required by the adapter (although this isn't really necessary) and connect the adapter to any USB enabled computer. They also make adapters so that your laptop HD can be installed inside a desktop computer, but a USB adapter is much easier to use and you're not limited to only using a single computer.

Local stores will have laptop HD (2.5") adapters, but they're usually cheaper and in limited selection that you can find online. In stores you can find generic branded ones for $20 or so, and better brands for $35 and up.

Like I said, your best bet is shopping online. Newegg is one of the most reputable computer component vendors out there. Check out resellerratings.com to verify this. They also have quite a few cheaper adapters, but some brands offer poor quality products. You can't really go wrong with Vantec, Apricorn, or Bytecc.

Check a computer store. They makecases that you can put your laptop drive into, and then it attaches to the desktop by a USB cable. Once attached, you can see the laptop drive as a second hard drive in the desktop. Copy over whatever you want from there.

Once done, you can leave the drive attached and continue to use it for extra storage and backups if you want.

The cases are around $45.

You can get a usb enclosure for a 2.5 Hard Drive, then you would put the HD in that and plug it into your computer.
