The kernel is the brain of the operating system. Are you getting errors related to it? If so, go to start, run, type in "msconfig" without quotes, then click ok. On the top right, click startup, then disable all, or use http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php to find out what you want to disable, then scroll through until you see your antivirus software, check that. Click apply, then close, and restart your computer.

the kernel is the core of your operative system, and the 32 number is about the architecture (32 bits or 64 bits).

The kernel usually contains the basic instruction for the operative system, things like how to control peripherals, memory etc.
