I recently attached a very old monitor (weighed about 35lbs!) to my high-speed custom computer. It worked for about 3 days, then just wouldn't bring up anything - comletely black screen. I did have a surge protector; was using cable internet. Thanks for any info .

Old monitors die because they are old.

The higher the refresh rate and resolution the more stress you put on a CRT, that may have had an effect.

Another factor if it had not been used for a while is that the electrolytic capacitors can dry out if they are stored for a long time (years).

Older CRT monitors can and frequently do go bad, the LCD (the skinny ones) monitors take up a lot less space, less energy and are safer, CRTs can hold enough electricity to kill you for several years after they are unplugged, be careful to dispose of it properly at a recycling center.

You can pickup a 17" LCD for about $200 (US)
