I have a 1993 Ford Explorer and I am having trouble keeping it running after I crank it. It starts then hiccups and dies. When I punch the gas it will start completly and stays running but it idles at 500-1000 RPM and is a little rough. Any idea what it may be or how to fix it?

Most likely cause is a clogged fuel filter.

However being a 1993, other things to consider.
1. Get fuel injectors cleaned.
2. When was the last time you got a tune up? (Changed out spark plugs/wires etc)
3. Changed out air filter.
4. Get the MAP sensor checked.

Typically vehicles idle between 600-800 rpm. You should be able to find this information under the hood of your vehicle on the emissions sticker usually.

If it's idleing at 500rpm, that's why it feels like it's running rough.

Go buy a bottle of Gumout fuel injector cleaner and pour it into your gas tank and drive for a tankful. Cost: about $6. (You might want to try that twice). Also, replace the air filter. Idle rpm is normal, but roughness is probably, in your case, being caused by improper fuel/air mixture. That's why you should do both of the above. Last resorts: replace the fuel filter (but I doubt that is the problem). Tune up might be needed. Notice how I do the inexpensive and easy things first? You should too.

Check the battery and your alternator with a volt meter. If the battery voltage decreases while the car is running then you need a new alternator.

If the problem is not electrical the You need to declog the fuel filter.

i've seen this before, take it to a repair shop and have them replace the fuel filter first then do a pressurized injector flush. when they finish you would swear you're driving a new car. this is all preventative maintenance anyway. i would suggest doing this once a year with the yearly tune up.
