Honestly tell your friend to go see her GYN cause any time there is an awful smell or abnormal discharge there is a chance that she could have some type of an infection. The best thing she could do for herself is to see a Dr.

She needs to go to a gynecologist immediately. It is very likely that something interfered with her last cycle and she developed large clots that didn't come out (hence the smell and brownish discharge). The gynecologist can remove that and determine how to avoid it in future, plus she may need antibiotics. Leaving it alone could result in a uterine infection which can interfere with later fertility (yes, and make you awfully sick).

Sounds like an infection. if this is real she should get to a doctor or emergency room for immediate antibiotics.
