I was discussing a show I saw about Einstein the other day with a friend and she said that he wasn't the first

that discovered E=MC2. Is that true?

He was the first that used work from previous scientists to formalize it and prove it mathematically.

Einstein was the first to put the theoretical framework together and realize that matter is simply another form of energy (amongst a great many other things).
