Because everybody thinks You have a future in America; It is a land of freedom and justice. Even illegal immigrants from south America wants to go there whatever the risk!

At a guess, I'd say that it's because he is/was American. For many Americans little or nothing exists outside the USA, and they get to hear very little of the the wider world. Blame Fox News (a misnomer if ever there was one, since their reporting is wildly biased).

Well for the same reason that Mary Higgins Clark did all her fiction around NJ. She was familiar with it and it was easier to make up stories that way. His fiction just followed suit.
