There are no free schools. In every school someone has to pay for the lights, heat, building maintenance, teachers, books, etc. So, either the students pay, or someone else has to pay.
Why shouldnt the people who are going to school pay? They are the ones getting the benefit! Little kids can't pay for themselves, so they get their schooling paid for by taxes. But adults can pay their own way for what they want, so they should have to fork over. There are plenty of colleges that are mostly paid for by the government, so you can go to them really cheaply. But schools that receive less government money have to charge the students more. Some cost a lot - at a nearby Ivy college the tuition and fees are over $40,000 a year, but a friend who is an official at the college told me their actual costs are over $70,000 a year. The difference is made up from endowment earnings and gifts from alumni.
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch TANSTAAFL!

Who said all Americans are entitled to a free education? Why do you think we pay taxes for public schooling?

College is not free because we need the money to "educate " , the comment about public school that was left is BS. All education should be free but because of the economy it's not ! We have a war to pay for, homeland security, and welfare so until education has a priority here well be payin' for it.

because the education level is mandated only up to a certain age in the United States. University level education is not federally mandated, so those who wish to pursue a college career must pay out of their own pockets. Furthermore, universities are not federally funded (even state colleges often deficit) and need to make up for it by charging their students an obscene amount of money to cover their costs. However, there are quite a few community colleges which only require the mandatory minimal fees for courses taken. Professors do not work for free.
If you want to attend University free of charge, then move to a Socialist country such as England that taxes the crap out of their citizens in order to pay for the social services offered.

I guess they mean free basic education, not higher education as in college. but I am with you. I feel you either pay it in education or you pay it in crime control

You as so right! I think colleges have become a big business and that is why education is so terribly expensive and limited to only those that have money. It's a rip off.
