Of course, all the answers regarding time are refering to straight-ahead, no sight-seeing driving. If you are going to do that, why take Highway 1? It is a long, difficult drive for the driver, who is going to miss most of the wonderful Big Sur country because his/her eyes will be on the road, and who will be exhausted by the time you get to SLO.

If you need to go in one day, take 101. If not, why not consider stopping in Monterey, taking the kids to the wonderful aquarium, and then making a more leisurely drive down Highway 1? It is about 135 miles, three hours, from Monterey to SLO.

it will take you probably 5 hours with maybe a stop for a bathroom...it is a very long winding road through big sure. so if you have kids who may get car sick at all, I would avoid it and take 101 instead. That would only take about 3 1/2 hours. and is only 230 miles. Though not as scenic.

Total mileage from SLO to SF via highway 1 is 261.8 miles. According to Mapquest, should take approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.

And to answer your question about the kids and one day, that would depend on the kids. My family routinely drove to LA in one day down I - 5 and it took 6 hours...and it didn't bother us. So that answer largely is up to your kids.

The above poster gave you the time to take Highway 101. Highway 1 is a two-lane, very winding highway from Monterey through Big Sur.

I'd give it about four-five hours. And count on the kids getting carsick.

Unless there is something you need to go to SLO,, I would go locally with a trip with kids,,it will be at least 5hrs,,pretty boring in the middle of the trip,as the freeway and road has not much to see... Bring something to keep the kids entertain,,maybe they will sleep most of the way,,but it is a long drive up and back 5-5 1/2 hrs down and same coming back??

It is 230.8 miles and the time is 3 hours and 27 mins. I do not feel that it is too far with little kids. Just give them a rest stop, snacks, and something to intertain themselves while you drive.

I would start out early and count on coming home after dark.
