Children are motivated to learn anything that they themselves find interesting. I homeschooled mine, and I found that if I let them start finding out about something ~ ANYTHING ~ pretty soon they were learning all sorts of related things and doing a lot of reading, learning history through that angle, and getting on web-sites and doing a lot of writing, and finding that often math was required to be able to learn how some things work.
The trouble with school is that the students have little choice about what they must learn and when, or how they will go about learning it. Different people have different learning styles. In a class-room full of children this is impossible to do.
About all a teacher in that position can do is to try to find an approach to a subject that most of the children might find interesting.

take into consideration that children who meet failure too often feel dejected about any learning. So if they are given easier tasks and succeed they will get motivated.
Praising children for progress they made, however little it is will motivate them.
Never tell a child that (s)he is stupid.
