Nooooooooo, I read 'Memoirs of a geisha' about 7 years ago, watched the film last week, & was very let down. I've never seen a film that was better than reading the book.

No, I don't think so. Generally, books can (and usually do, if the author is a good one) provide so much more depth, background information, and character development than a movie does - and movies limit your imagination because they "show" you everything, but a book will allow it to soar. I have also found that sometimes the book is only a starting point for the movie and the only thing the two have in common is the title.

But, truly, neither one is really better, I just happen to prefer reading; it pretty much boils down to what you enjoy doing - so do what you enjoy! (Unless you are watching a movie to avoid reading a book that you have to read for a school assignment - then I very much recommend reading the book.)

This is one of the most skewed debates since the birth of cinema. Nearly everybody believes that books are always better than movies, but there are many, many cases of movies far exceeding the novels upon which they were based.

Nearly anything by Stanley Kubrick is better than the book he based his screenplay upon (except Lolita). Other examples are Fight Club, Last of the Mohicans, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Gone With the Wind, any Michael Crichton story, any John Grisham story, etc... The list is as endless as a list of movies.

People need to recognize that novels and films are two different things, capable of achieving VERY different results. Great novels are sometimes ruined on film, but mediocre novels (The Godfather, for example) are often so far exceeded by a brilliant director's vision that you'll never read the book again.

Don't jump on the film-hating bandwagon.

Not really no. I read The Da Vinci Code and then I watched the film and I can honestly say that the book is much better.
If you have the ability to read a book and to visualise what you are reading then I would read the book everytime. Then if you want to watch the movie, go for it. You could compare the 2 and choose for your self.
Having said all that I tried to read Romeo and Juliet, and I couldn't make sense of it, I bought the Leo DiCaprio movie and I got it first time.

Read the book first, watch the movie last. In most cases the movie doesn't do the book any justice. The Color Purple, Waiting to Exhale, To Kill a Mockingbird and Matilda are all great examples. Movies often leave out some of the best parts from the book.

Not necessarily. Remember that you can fit more story into a book than the average 1 hour, 45 minute movie. Books are illustrated by your mind and you can replay a scene until you find the people YOU would cast in those roles. No cell phones or screaming babies to spoil the story, you can put down a book and pick up the story right where you left off. Never miss a scene becuse of an urgent call of nature. You can carry the story with you, instead of going to it. Not to mention the FREE aspect of borrowing the book from the library. Yes, I love going to movies too!

I like to see the film first, then read the book.

If you read the book first, then see the movie, there is always stuff they leave out or change. Also, you form an image in your mind about the characters and the actors in the movie may not look the way you imagined them, which is disappointing.

But if you see the movie first then read the book, it sort of fills in the gaps.

I prefer the book over the film. Books usually have more detail than movies, and aren't censored like movies. Plus I prefer to use my imagination and picture the scenes and characters in my head. A lot of times the characters in the movies are totally different than in the book. Plus movies are condensed and sometimes don't do a good job of conveying the storyline.

i like to do both.
ive read 'da vinci code' then watched the film i was not impressed!
ive read all harry potter books and seen the films, i love both
watched angelas ashes and started reading the rest of frank mccourts books, i love the film but the book has more in it.
its easier to watch the film but reading the book you can take yourself into that story and imagine it in your own way.
i really enjoy reading and using my imagination to picture what is going on, with a film its someone else vision.
just to point out i do still very much like watching films, but i love reading too.
