Till was visiting family in Mississippi when he was murdered. He lived in Chicago. When his mother held the funeral, she opted to have open casket and allow people to take photos so everyone could see what had been done to him. It was considered so shocking that it galvanized the civil rights movement. Not only was this child brutally murdered, but his killers walked free and then admited publically that they had murdered him. Many Northerners had no idea these things happened, let alone what the aftermath physically looked like.

What a sad story... and how strong and powerful his mother was to permit the open coffin.
Essentially, the murder of Emmett Till kicked the civil rights movement into high gear.

Emmit Till was a14 year old Boy who was lynched for flirting to a White Woman. Once the body was recovered his mother gave a public and open coffin Wake which motivated the Black Community to the realization that they could no longer ignor the threat Jim Crow Segregationisms imposed on them. Hence the Emmit Till Case was a water shed kind of wake up call for civil rights and anti lynch laws!

He was a young boy who was not from the south, but was treated to a really KKK party when he allegedly whistled at a white woman. He was less than 15 years old and was brutally killed with no trial, just biggots.
To answer you question though, he was a young black man that was not given fair treatment. That is basically what civil rights means, equal and fair treament. His rights were violated and his life was stolen because someone said that he whistled at a white woman. He as not from the south, nor was he familiar with that type of society. And it has not been firmly established that he did whistle at the woman.
