It refers to the generational difference. Example you have a cousin so that relationship is first cousins. If your cousin has a child then they are your first cousin once removed. If you have a child as well, the 2 children are second cousins. when you get old and your first cousin has a child then it would be your first cousin twice removed and a third cousin to your grand child.

Once removed means that a difference of one generation . Example your 2nd cousin is actually your 1st cousin once removed and your 3rd cousins are your 1st cousins twice removed. I did a report on it in school, but that was a long time ago. I believe you can get better examples on a geology web-site.

Your first cousins.

3rd removed are your third generation cousins. I think it is 3rd or 4th removed trhat makes it alright to marry. It has to be diluted enough to where as it would not make a difference thru offspring.
