A DivX Codec is a file that tells the video card how to talk to a video file created in the DivX format.

The cool thing is once you have installed a DivX codec most every video program will use it and you can watch the video files in any different programs, such as Windows Media Player or a P2P File Sharing Player.

Divx is a way of encoding video files so that they are compressed (smaller in size) and can be downloaded over high speed internet lines. Codec actually stands for compressor/decompressor and is what you have to install so that windows can decompress the file and make the video playable. Xvid is the free, open source version of Dvix. My advice to you is to NOT install the divx codec and download VLC media player instead. (you can get it @ www.download.com) It does not require codecs and is totally free,

Divx is a way to encode video. It is necessary to view videos that are encoded that way. It's a popular one. You can download it from the main website from divx.com

Don't download it anywhere else though, you could potentially get a virus or spyware.
