I know a guy who does not know how to drive. Since he cannot operate an automobile, he must pay to have someone do it for him (or rely on the goodness of friends).

It is a simple fact that what you do not know how to do, you cannot do.

If you know how to do trigonometry, you tend to use that ability from time to time. Where I work we cut and bend metal. Our salesman have to know what angles to bend the metal. They have trig tables and formulas printed out for them, but sometimes they are presented with problems the tables do not cover. That is where I come in.

There are some esoteric branches of mathematics that do not appear to have real world applications. But then, appearances can be deceiving. Non euclidean geometries have real world applications in theoretical physics. Imaginary numbers--even roots of negative numbers--have real world applications in electronics.

Knowledge is power. The more you know, the more useful you can be. That is especially true of mathematics, which is the foundation of all the sciences.
