I have heard of people throwing babies in pools and they learn how to automatically, but I cant imagine doing that with my 2 month old. Is that true and what kind of swimming experiences do you have with your youngsters.

I've taught parent/infant classes. You can start introducing your child to the water as young as a few months. A good instructor will be able to lead you in this exploring of the water while maintaining the safest of environments.
I have known children who can swim across a pool (25 yards) at two years old. I have taught children to swim butterfly before they turned 6 years old. I have friends who are still afraid of the water at age 30. The best thing you can do is encourage any behavior of exploration or play in the water and be an example of how the water can be a fun, safe place.
If you want to enroll in a parent/infant or parent/toddler class, that is great, but I wouldn't consider swimming a necessary skill until about age 5.

The instinct people are talking about when they "throw" babies in the water is a survival instinct that infants have. They use their arms to force their bodies upward but it's not "swimming". What it is is the reaction to sinking which will soon develop into the drowning reflex; this is what victims do who are actively drowning. It does help the kid come up for air but there are better ways to go about it.

As the person above me said, making the child comfortable in the water is your biggest step. Outside of using the bathtub, try taking a parent-child swim class. These classes are group classes for infants and toddlers where their parent oarticiaptes in the water with them. A good instructor can make this class amazing for both babies and parents. The soon you get your baby in the water the sooner he or she will develop the skills needed to swim. The longer you wait the more fear he or she will develop about the water by being told to stay away and that they will drown if they fall in. If you are not afraid, your baby will not be afraid.

By the time he or she turns 2 you can think about parent-free swim lessons. My favorite classes are full of 3-year-olds who are not afraid to jump off the side of the pool water and swim around underwater. If you start your child early you will be very pleased with the results!

I've been teaching children to swim since I was discovered giving lessons when I was six in my backyard pool to a friend who was scared. Since then I've never left the water world. Competitive swimmer, swim instructor and coach each provide their own challenges and I can confidently say that you should be in the water with your child as soon as possible, it will be a great bonding experience ( =

Good luck!!!

Yes, up to several months a baby can be thrown into water and they will instinctly hold his/her breath. This is due habitation within the womb where their breath was held for 9 months. Science has long before discovered that newborns could do this; Ever heard of water births? However, this reflex is soon lost after a year or slightly before. From then on, a parent must teach their child to hold their breath again, let alone swimming with arm strokes. Research before doing anything.

I was diving to bottom of a 12 ft pool by the time i was three!

Do not throw your baby in the pool.

Teaching a child how to swim begins with making them comfortable in the water. Begin with the bathtub. Get into the bath with your child and teach them to be comfortable in the water.

I've seen babies as old as one year swimming, and also known children that were 5 and would drown. I cannot ever remember LEARNING how to swim--I was always in the water.

So begin in the bathtub, getting your child comfortable in water. Babies will usually understand how to hold their breath underwater automatically, but this does not mean they will know what to do when they need to take a NEW breath. They won't be able to get themselves to the surface. So you can help your baby learn how to be comfortable holding his breath underwater but you need to be there to bring the baby back to the surface.
