Probably true. Senator Obama's skin color and rumored religious beliefs would draw a lot of attention from the fringe of Sanity. Bill and Hillary already have a full detail, because of Bill's status as a former President. It's not a waste of taxpayer money to protect our democratic process, and the Secret Service will protect whomever it deems necessary. Thank God we have such dedicated public servants as the Secret Service.

Anyone in the public eye will recieve some threats - just because there are nutty people out there - I'd think a presidential candidate would likely get more than most.
As to whether going public with them would be a political ploy, well, so is everything any politician wants the public to know about. Thier whole lives are carefully scripted political ploys.

Cheap campaign ploy, no. Threats, probably. If you spend just a couple of hours on Y!A in the P&G section, you will find a great deal of hatred, racial slurs, threats, etc. And this is just a bunch of people with nothing better to do. Imagine what violent, racist, organized groups could do. Campaigns bring out the best and the worst in people. I don't care what your party affiliation is, if your life is in danger you should be protected.

Oh get over it!!
Hillary and George BOTH HAVE Secret service details. What's you point?
Obama put in a request...it's up to the Secret Service and the Congress to allow give it to him or not.
John Kerry requested one as well, but Congress didn't think it was necessary until 9mos before the Elections. Maybe the Congress thinks Obama MIGHT just need it...
and with people like you making so much noise about it..it's no wonder.

You've made a lot of assumptions here. We all know that we are not aware of a lot of things. For example here in NYC we were only made aware that there had been significant threats against the subway system well after the fact. Sometimes not revealing information is a way of deterring copycats. You do remember the copycat argument after Virgina Tech?

What I find funny is, that the threats were found out about from monitoring Chatter on White Supremacist sites.....but isn't this a freedom that Bush is supposedly taking away that we hear every day on Y/A from the left posters on the monitoring and patriot act......hmmm awfully quiet now when it effect their beliefs...
Celtix...typical response...

garyb: Hello? Can't you see the difference between monitoring information on a website (which is accessible to anyone anyway, that's why people PUT IT ON A WEBSITE) and listening in on a private phone conversation?

Oh dude, Obama is going to get it from all attitude's. From southern white supremacists with small penises asserting they going to assassinate him to anti-American international places in Europe and the middle east, it somewhat is all coming down on him. i'm hoping the guy can pull even with the shown fact that :)

I am surprised that Al Sharpton did not use the same political propaganda but then again, I guess Obama has a lot more savvy.
