Oh death you joker. You know the Islamic Fascists started this war. You also may know that the Shia and Sunni factions of Islam have been at each others throats for hundreds of years so why would you make such a stupid statement as "we started it"?

As to the prime question: We are in it because it is in our national interest to be in it. Many have identified the economic interest that draws us to that region but forget to talk about the political/military interest that we have. The Islamic Fascist movement (both the religious and secular branches) has used the USA as the bad guy for the last 50 years. When their economy is bad it the USA's fault. When they have to explain poverty and disease it’s the USA's fault etc, etc, etc...

This has lead some of the most irrational among them to demand the destruction of the USA since (as they see it we cause it all). Now you can tolerate people saying nutty things to you but when they kill your people (been doing so for over 25 years) and destroying your property as in 9/11 you have to get involved. Saddam as leader of Iraq made the mistake of thinking that nothing would happen to him if he continued to act in a belligerent way after 9/11. He was mistaken. Now Iraq is the central front in a asymmetrical war waged by people whose goal is to destroy our way of life. That is why it is in our national interest to be in Iraq and that is why, Civil War or not, we must stay to see victory.

We created the environment that made civil war in Iraq possible. Morally, how can we possibly leave the innocent Iraqis without help? I hate that so many of our soldiers are dying, but we, as a country, cannot go around destroying the stability and infrastructure of other countries and then wash our hands of the whole thing as if we have the right to play God.
