My divorce decree did not include returning me to my maiden name but I don't want to use his name anymore. It should be easy to file myself but I can't find the form without paying for it.

as far as i know there is now way to do it without paying for it. unless they make a special exception for divorcees, but i'm not sure.

what i do know for sure is that you don't need a lawyer, simply go to the county clerk's office and tell them that you want to change your name. they'll give you the forms for free but you will have to pay some fees when you turn the forms back in. you'll also have to make an announcement in your local paper which will also require some money.

I don't think you have to go and change it, just take your divorce decree along with your birth certificate and go apply for a new driver's license with your maiden name. After you get that, you can call your bank, credit cards etc and just have it changed, if they want some proof, copy them the driver's license.

in most states, you can use whatever name you want. it becomes your legal name by using it consistently. here's a form to use.
