Ok, oil is expensive enough (and show's no sign of dropping) to make it financially viable to ramp up oil extraction from the 'oil sands' in Canada (they are already our largest single source of crude oil already). Why not shift our efforts away from the middle east and towards Canada. If U.S oil companies can show there is another viable source for crude supplies and threaten to pull out of that part of the world, you just watch how fast the governments in that area exterminate terrorist and militia groups. Agreed? Pie in the sky, I know.

That is a great idea. We can do that in the interum while we do research and development into alternative energy sources. If we work as hard and are as innovative as Americans are known to be we can develop systems for producing alternative and clean energy very rapidly. We could put Americans to work in American labs and factories to make it happen. What kind of a kick in the butt do Americans need to say enough with the foreign (other than Canadian) oil. If the Arabs and Persians want to kill each other, if they want to live in the 14 th Century then we should let them. The quicker we get this done the quicker we will be able to see Middle Eastern countries respecting us and our allies in the region.

Because the logistics of extraction are difficult and the costs are still rising. Acceleration of oil sands development will only add to the inflationary cost pressures. I think oil sands might provide 3-4 million barrels per day in the next decade. We are a long way from replacing 10 million barrels that Saudi Arabia provides.

I think what it comes down to is that no one is going to come up with a viable energy source other than oil until we have to ... call it lazy.. call it greedy.. call it whatever... and the thought is... let everyone burn all of their oil at this lesser price... and the US/West will make BANK when it has the last stockpile for the world.... it would be like the money the ME is getting.. on CRACK...

extraction of that oil is getting easier by the day too. and dont forget. during this warm spell the earth is going through, think about all the oil or god knows what will be thawed out for exploration when upper canada unfreezes. its canadas and thats a fact, but can you imagine the problems that will create if ships could move through the canadian waters up there towards the arctic? will they start protecting their waterways? who knows? bet you there a lot of oil too!

I agree totally. By the way, we have enough oil in Anwar, the Gulf of Mexico, and in Colorado's oil shale to provide gas etc. for over 200 years taking population and consumption growth into perspective. Yes, the conservative (intelligent) people should push to have such things done and to ignore the loony left which feels drilling will interfere with caribou breeding ( whether with each other or with them) and Al Gore's Convenient Lie.

All exploration in North America should be a priority for us. That means in the Gulf, in the Ocean, in the Rockies, everywhere. Your logic for the rest of it is really the ultimate on our fight against terrorism. If we don't need their oil, maybe it would be the incentive we need to finish the job. Too bad the environmentalists will not let it happen.

Why not allow us to tap our resources in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico? We have a lot of untapped resources in our own country.
