In conjunction with stretching shoes, there is a kind of shoe spray that helps soften the leather. I have purchased it at stores like Wal Mart and Target.
We also have some shoe stretchers at our house. They are as described in one of the earlier answers. They are basically foot-shaped blocks of wood that expand when you turn a screw handle. I bought one at Target a few years ago.
New shoes tend to be a little stiff. You may want to apply a leather balm to the leather to help it loosen up. I am not going to go so far as to suggest that you get some neatsfoot oil and use it on your shoes. It works okay for baseball gloves, but I don't want to take any blame if it discolors your shoes or sandals.

Stuff the shoes full of socks packed really tight in there. Let the socks in there for a couple of weeks. Its takes a long time for leather to stretch and stay that way.

try and wedge a hard object into the toe part of the shoe and leave it wedged in there for a few days and that should help stretch it. Whenever my boyfriend gets soccer shoes that he needs to stretch he stuffs them and then puts them in water in the bathtub to have the leather stretch..... but you might not want to take that approach cause it might ruin your sandals or discolor them...... good luck!

You can buy a device made specifically for this purpose. Call around to different shoe stores to see if they have one. Basically, it's two piece of wood connected by one or more screws. You turn a crank, which causes the screws to turn, and increase the distance between the pieces of wood. (Of course the device is IN your shoes while you are doing this.) Put this device in, stretch your shoes a bit, then leave it that way over night.

Shoe trees can marginally stretch shoes. This will work for shoes that are just a touch too tight. If you're looking to stretch shoes, a better product to use would be a shoe stretcher.

Wet some newspaper and stuff it in where you need it to stretch. I mean stuff it in there. The newspaper will expand while it drys, gently stretching your shoes.
