If it IS torn you will have extensive pain on movement and you may need surgery. You really should see a doctor. An emergency room cannot turn anyone away based on ability to pay and you may be able to work out a payment scheme beforehand. Also, there ARE free clinics for these things, check your phone book. A rotator injury is nothing to mess with, trust me.

Steroids won't help. Cold will help with the pain and inflammation. Avoid heat, it increases swelling. Tylenol or Ibuprofen will help with pain and swelling. You should imobilize the arm across your chest in a sling if you think it is injured to avoid further damage to the area. Healing takes a LOT of time and you should avoid lifting any object heavier than a pencil with that hand until it is fully healed.

By not having this looked at you are setting yourself up for further injury in the future.

My dad just tore his rotator cuff and he had trouble moving his arm at all without any pain. Fast jerky motions really bothered his shoulder. Try stretching your arm out to your side and behind you to see if there is any real discomfort. The best thing to do would be to ice it and give it a week to see if it feels better. If it is torn a week is not going to matter.
