They aren't releasing much information on this. The rather brief statement issued simply said there have been a lot of threats and that the congressional committee, the Dept of Treasury (parent agency to the Secret Service) and the Obabma people reviewed them and felt that a detail should be assigned.

No contenders are usually provided a detail until the primary's approach but the committe felt this was needed.

By law, all major candidates for the presidency may request Secret Service protection. Of course, Senator Clinton has been protected by the Secret Service for years.

ALL presidential candidates receive secret service protection.

I'm not saying you can go tell your bartender that you're running for office and Jack from 24 shows up to pay your bartab or anything, but once the formalities associated with being named a serious candidate for a presidential election are in place, the candidate receives Secret Service protection.

The Treasury Department (a.k.a. The Secret Service) guards ALL candidates for President, as well as the President. It's only after the electrion (and the winner announced) that Presidential Details are dropped from the prospective candidates.

There are threats against Obama posted every day on the internet by white supremacist groups. Some are even phoned to his office.

There are just too many fringe lunatics in the USA who might get lucky and kill him. I can barely imagine the racial strife this would engender, and most of us would be horribly saddened by the loss of someone who may become a goof leader of this country. The costs are well worth it. Consider ht alternatives and pay it just like one pays for insurance.

He draws huge crowds of people and has received death threats. He is allowed to request secret service protection if he meets certain requirements, which obviously he did.

My understanding it that all presidential candidates are while they are running for office. He may have received specific threats that have required an increased presence.
