There is a technology called ANI (automatic number identification) that can be used by the telephone carrier to track the call. However, in order to utilize it, you'd need special software, and most likely a court order.

"Private" and "Unknown" are almost the same result. "Unknown" means that the caller id system was not able to discern what the number is, while "Private" means the number was deliberately blocked. Sometimes, even if they deliberately block their number, some carriers will display "Unknown" instead. Its dependent on the software installed in the cell switch.

You *could* block all private calls. Your carrier would then give them a recording that says "This caller has chosen not to accept calls from blocked numbers." Then if they wanted to call you, they'd have to unblock the call.

Good luck.
