Sashimi is like Sushi only without the vinegared rice, yakiniku is yaki - grilled, niku, meat, usually chicken or pork, on a stick. its delicious. Nabe sounds familair...

As for breakfast, it depends on the family. Miso soup is very very popular. Rice is almost a given at every meal. Never mix shoyu or soy sauce with the rice. Usually fish and some vegtables. Potatoes are rare. It all depends on the family.

Sashimi are slices of raw fish - great if you love sushi, but not so great if you don't! Especially when your Japanese mother-in-law plonks a plate of it in front of ur face when your 12 weeks pregnant and in the throes of morning sickness.

Yakuniku is a grilled meat but have never tried it so I'm not sure what the taste is like. Not sure what Nabe is.

Other foods are Tempura (fried food) like vegetable cake type things.
udon - fat white noodles
soba - thin grey noodles

thats all I can think of. I'm not a Japanese food fan

Sashimi, is slices of raw fish.
Yakiniku, is kind of like stir fried meat, dipped in a sauce. MY FAVORITE!!
Nabe, is like a cauldron of boiling water with veges and other stuff. Very versital, and fun dish. Fun party dish.

The most common is "Miso soup". Most Japanese have it everyday for one meal or more. Miso is a soybean paste. Natto, is also very common. It is another form of soybean that is fermented. Smells terrible, but is said to be healthy.
You have heard of TOFU, right? Another soybean by product.

not sure about the others, but sashimi is raw fish.
um, other japanese foods could be miso soup, lots of rice, seafood.
also okonomiyaki is the specialty of osaka or hiroshima. its like this big pancake with noodles and other stuff all mixed in and cooked in front of you. yum!
also, they can drink a lot of cold tea. its sold in bottles just like coke or juice or something.
be prepared for weird stuff too though - a friend of mine ate raw steak and cows udder!!! and don't eat umeboshi! sour as.
tempura is good. its like deep fried stuff.
