And for those who spend far too much time here, why don't you have much of a life? This doesn't apply to home bound people or medically restricted people.

You must be smart to ask such a great question.

Anything can become 'addictive"--to anyone who uses it as a substitute for reality, emotionally-true experiencing of reality, purposeful action, authentic experience, scientific-level judgment, etc.

The idea is that every time something threatens to be a negative emotion, the person runs away and uses the immediate positive of a discontexted "pleasure"--eating a cookie, using drugs, grabbing a bottle of alcohol, getting angry at someone, watching junk TV or listening to junk music, eating a gum drop or anything else--to AVOID dealing with the negative emotions. They're just saying "No" to life that way.
Yahoo Answers and the Internet can be such an addiction.

The ways to avoid the problem are:
Confine the time spent.
Name the addiction, postpone it five minutes while you do something else, and then come back to it in context of knowing it is both immediately enjoyable and dangerous.
limit the number if questions of answer points you will spend or earn, as I do.

The danger is that an addiction weakens your grasp on reality. You eventually need more and stronger doses of this or any other drug in order to get the same "fix" for your original failure to deal with the negative emotions, responsibilities, fears etc. that you were running from.

I try to limit what I do to 33 points a day, hopefully with some points from my Best Answers. If not--25 points at most. And I can skip the day if necessary.

I think anywhere from 18 to 24 is about right - and no, I'm not addicted, I can stop answering any time I want to.
