Cheerleading takes a great amount of athletic ability and cheerleaders are athletes but I don't consider it to be a sport. My definition of a sport is an athletic contest in which there is a clear winner. Any activity that has to be "judged" is not really a sport. (I know this is going to upset some people.) That would eliminate a lot of things like figure skating, gymnastics, and boxing. A contest that has judges is based on the opinion of the judge and too often turns into a popularity contest.

Cheerleading is not a sport - it is a talent competition. If cheerleading is a sport then so is American Idol.

Sorry, but anything that is judged on an artistic basis is not a sport. Sure it takes ability and practice but so does painting.

Yes, I include things like figure skating, gymnastics and synchronized swimming in the non-sport category.

Rooting for a sports team is not a sport. If cheerleading is a sport, being a fan is a sport.

Cheerleading is Not a sport. It's just a bunch of air heads trying to be fake and show off in front of a bunch of jocks. Many people argue with me saying it is because you have to exercise and work hard to keep up. but you have to do the same thing to live a healthy lifestyle.

...so cheerleading is not a sport

I don't know why people don't think it isn't a sport. It is really hard and I bet most football, baseball, basketball, etc. players could not do it. Can you tell I used to be a cheerleader?...haha

Because it's not a sport. It is not competitive in any real sense.

I also don't consider NASCAR a sport.. because it doesn't require athletic ability.

To be a sport.. something must meet both requirements. True competition and athletic ability.
