I thought salt was bonded by very electrostatic forces of attraction? How come it dissolves in water?

water is the universal solvent. given the right time limit it can dissolve anything. but im not sure(chemically) why salt and sugar dissolve.

Both started out as a liquid. Both are dried, salt naturally and sugar manufactured. When put in a liquid, they return to their original state.
