Check out this site: http://www.fourfa.com
It was posted on a band fanboard I go to a while back, and I think it does a pretty good job explaining the whole thing- where the term came from, how it's changed, and there are some samples of different emo/emo-related styles of songs. (And 31 is not old. ^_^)

I don't know either and this is all I could find. I'm 35... showing our ages! UGH!
The term emo originated in the 1980s to describe a genre of music stemming from the hardcore punk music scene in Washington, D.C. Early bands labeled emo (or sometimes emocore) in this scene included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Fugazi.[2][3][4] The term emo as a music genre has become broader and broader with time, and now is loosely understood to mean "rock music with emotionally-based lyrics or effect," which could be used to describe a broadly and poorly defined group of nearly every popular (or unpopular) rock band. The term is so loosely defined because its definition is still the subject of debate.[1][2][3] Emo now often refers to a person's fashion, personality, or both, as well as the music genre.

remember the goths? kind of like that. except emos are whiney 15-17 year old kids that think they have all these problems and are depressed. but this only because the great emo music bands have made them think this is cool.
someone will say i'm stereotyping this kids, but I speak the truth.
don't worry, this fad will pass. it's kind of like in the early 90s when nerds were cool for a little bit. actually, it's exactly like that.

To be honest I'm not entirely sure what an Emo is and I'm 18 which certainly isn't old, not that 31 is either really.

Emos are the newer punks/goths. The term emo comes from the word, emotional. Basically, they're a bunch of (mostly) whiny, middle class posers that think their lives are disillusioned with their priveleged upbringing. This is coming from the ones that go to my daughter's middle school.

Actually, the term 'emo' is used instead of the word 'scene.' The kids actually described are "scene" you know, the kids "in with the scene." Basically, they're just kids with long hair, tight clothes, and many peircings. If you were to go to myspace, you'd see about 10 thousand of them.

And, in addition to emo music, there is an offshoot referred to as screamo, which is emo music covered over with unintelligible screams (like Chiodos)

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

no you're not old. music is just expanding a lot nowadays.
emo stands for emotional. it's popluar among teens because most emo is about nobody understanding you, relationships, .. mainly relationships. i'm only 19 myself. i listened to emo a lot when i was 13 and it made me feel better. emo kids are just.. not depressed kids.. but they're not jocks.. basically. they're more sensitive.
