Take your Dad shopping for a drill. Tell him you want to treat, and about how much you are willing to spend. He will advise you if you are too high or low in your estimate. Dad wins by being able to pick out what he wants. A man's tools are a very personal thing.

You both win because you get to spend some quality time together. The time will be more precious to him than the drill, trust me!

As an Electrician, I recommend Milwaukee's new line of brushless 18volt Li drills. You'll probably want to get him the 1/2" drive, metal chuck, hammer drill option version of the FUEL series. Home Depot sells them. So does Capital/Tristate electric supply, and Dominion electric supply. Or you can look up other retailers on Milwaukees website. I have a Milwaukee 1/2" drive hammer drill that is 7 years old. It still runs strong. I still have all 4 original NiCD 18v batteries. Only one of them has 2 bad cells so it only gets around 15 volts. I use it for lights instead. It has been an excellent investment and has served me well. My next drill will definitely be a Milwaukee. I really have no need for an impact driver, and really really don't like plastic chucks on drills. An electrican needs a sturdy and heavy duty drill with a metal chuck, 1/2" drive and hammering option. Trust me on this.

I have used a Panasonic 15.6 volt for 10+years. They are light and much more compact that the other drills I have. I also own a Bosch and a dewalt both are bulky and heavy but very powerful. I see lots of electricians on job sites with either Panasonic or the new makita lithium cordless tools, but the lithium batteries make the makita somewhat pricey. I would stay away from Milwaukee cordless tools, I have not heard much good about their longevity. Hope this helps.

I agree with some of the other posts on a gift card. But in order to get a good drill that will last a long time, you will need to put about $200 on it. If you decide to buy one for him, my personal choice is DeWalt. The XRP line is very durable and dependable. Milwakee is also a very good brand. Don't buy a $20.00 special Black and Decker or other off brand. My wife actually did that to me when we got married and it did upset her when I told her I needed a good drill.

go with a dewalt. i have had many different drills and dewalts seem to last the longest. not only do they last but they arent that heavy, if ur dad is useing it constantly like i have to for my job he definatly doesn't want to be lugging around a real heavy drill. my dewalt gets used on an average of about 4 hours a day and i have had it for over 2 years now. thats a lot conciderring the price. dewalts are a little exspensive but when it comes to drills, u definatly get what u pay for!!!

I just bought a DeWalt 12 volt. My son-in-law likes something bigger, he an electrician, a master. He bought a 18 volt with a hammer for cement, both were Mine $130.00 and his $159.00 and came with two batteries, the case and extras plus free delivery. Both are cordless. You can get one cheaper but remember, you get what you buy. Both came from Home Depot.

I agree with "sic and tired" I love my tools and I love good tools. Get him a gift card and let him pick out his own tools.

i am also a tradesman, and i prefer to pick out my own tools. especially if they're expensive power tools. if you're not getting top shelf stuff, then i would suggest a gift card.
