No. The original trilogy was updated/remastered and sold with the effects George Lucas wanted and couldn't produce in 78. He also added in scenes that were excluded in the theatrical version of the movie. Remember...Star Wars is all one big story. I grew up and saw Star Wars (episode 4) in the theater. No one had ever seen effects like Lucas did for the film before. It is the same with all movies now. The industry has grown tremendously. Plus, you can not replace Harrison Ford as Han, Mark Hammil as Luke, and Carrie Fisher as Lea. As outdated as they may seem, they are perfect in the eyes of all who lived through the first movies. The new ones (1,2,3) are excellent too because they filled in the gaps and answered questions from the originals.

No way!
The originals should be locked in a vault and not messed with anymore. The rights and scripts should also be protected from any future remake attempts.
For those of us who grew up with the original trilogy, I think I can say for all of us that they were more than just movies, they were a huge part of our lives! You have to keep in mind the context in which they were realeased. In 1977, Star Wars (Ep.4) was a ground-breaking movie in terms of special effects, scope, and locations.
Without the original trilogy, there would not be all the Sci-Fi movies I assume you grew up with. In fact I still believe that the special effects used in Return of the Jedi (Ep.6) are far better than what they're producing today in some movies (ID4 for example).
The original trilogy is more character driven whereas the new trilogy is more effects driven and feels rushed. I loved Revenge of the Sith but I thought Phantom Menace was garbage (except for Darth Maul of course). To me, seeing real people dressed up in costumes brings a much more real, sincere, and believable feel to the originals. The new trilogy goes a bit overboard on the effects in my opinion (eg. the Battle of Endor is much more riveting than the stupid Gungan Battle on Naboo).
Sorry to have such a long answer but you've sparked a hot issue. Watch the originals again thinking about the context and I think you'll understand what us lovers of the originals are talking about.

NO WAY!!! Those movies are Fantastic as they are. Even the newer versions with the added effects that Lucas did aren't nearly as cool as the originals wtith the original effects. What they should do is make the next trilogy. The stories of Han Solo and Leia when they have kids, and what happens to Luke Skywalker are very good. There needs to be a different director than Lucas, though. He should still use his influence with the special effects, but they need a fresh director.

No, and here's three really good reasons why.
Reason Number One:
Lucas has gone crazy. He's become self indulgent and as evidenced in the prequel trilogy, he has become far too caught up in the politics of his own mythology. He also can't write dialouge.
Reason Number Two:
Alec Guiness is dead. And as cool as Ewan McGregor was in the prequels (He's easily the best part of II and III) Alec Guiness IS Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Reason Number Three:
You're never going to find anybody as cool as Harrison Ford to play Han Solo. He owns that role. Just like he owns Indiana Jones.
Lucas tried to add the "brilliant" special effects of the prequels in the famed "Special Editions." And they sucked.
Finally, I ask you, how can you fail to see the awesome-ness of the original trilogy?
It has better dialouge, a much cooler villain, Han Solo, and a real sense of adventure and excitement that apparently Jedis didn't crave in the prequels.
Plus the emotional connections in the lightsaber fights made the originals cooler. You can have all the fancy footwork you want, but I'd much rather watch two guys use their words as much as their blades.

The original trilogy should remain as is however I wouldn't mind seeing a Star Wars tv show based on events of the old trilogy (possibly Shadows of the Empire).

the special effects wher better in the new movies, as was the sword fighting, but the script acting dialog and story wher atrocious, when i was younger i was all about special effects too. but now i'll trade every special effect for a good script any day, that why movies like the god father and forest gump (and the original star wars) will go down as timeless classics while the average high budget summer block buster will fade into obscurity, not gonna mention any names like water world or anything

the latest three were horrible. I was extremely disappointed in Hayden Christensen, whom I had liked until then. I also am too young to have been around for the original, but when I did see it, I thought it was 1000 times better than the new "prequels". I hope Lucas doesn't disgrace that franchise any further by making more.

Please God no! Jesus, I can't believe you managed to choose the exact people I would HATE to see play those roles. Johnny Depp as Han Solo... Christ.
