My best friend and I play ALL THE TIME. Between the 2 of us we own, 2 regular games, 2 travel scrabbles, a super-scrabble and an old deluxe game with a swiveling board. We sometimes turn down parties to sit on her porch playing scrabble.

Does anyone else do this?

Am I a total dork???

Has anyone ever played in a tournament? If so, what's that like?

Me !!! I'm a fan of just about all word games, but Scrabble is my favorite. My mother taught me how to play as a child and she taught me so well that I beat her about 98% of the time and now she won't play me in the English version just the Spanish one.

I've played in Literati (Yahoo's version of Scrabble) tournaments quite a few times while being a member of a league. It can be quite exciting as you are playing from players from all over the world. It definitely helps you increase your vocabulary (I never knew that there were words with "Q" in them w/o a "U" afterwards).

P.S. : NOOO, you are not a dork, (total or otherwise). I find that people that play Scrabble are less likely to falter in their speech and use "ummmm", or overuse the word "like", or simply refer to everything as "that thing, you know, the thing".

I love Scrabble. I am an assistant director of National Scrabble Association Club 42 in The Twin Cities in Minnesota. The current national champion, Jim Kramer, is a member of this club. (You may have seen his championship match, against Texas's Geoff Thevenot on ESPN.)

I have played in many tournaments, and have directed a few, too.

There are some differences in rules in sanctioned tournaments .All games are played one-on-one. Also. a "chess clock" is used, with each player allowed 25 minutes. There is also a specific sequence of play, but it is easy to learn.

If you decide to try a tournament, and they can be lots of fun, I strongly recommend that you attend an NSA club a few times, to learn the "Quirks" of competitive play. you can find as list of clubs on the website of the National Scrabble Association.

I just recently got hooked on Scrabble online. Login through yahoo messenger and you can play it against an online friend. Tons of fun.

But as for turning down parties to play Scrabble?? NO. Never done that. That's a bit excessive!

You would love the book Word Freak. It's about a man's quest to become a Scrabble champion. There was also a documentary called Word Wars about the people who devote their lives to scrabble tournaments.

I have the computer version of scrabble and play with my 83 yr old mother while we eat dinner. Sometimes she wins- wait- most of the time she wins cause I try to build a word hoping I will get certain letters. I use the word QAT a lot when it is obvious that all the "u's" are gone. Favorite move is being able to add to the beginning and end of a word and hit two red squares for triple word score. Highest score on one word has been 168. It NEVER gets boring.
